Joan M. Hornung, 93, of Wausau, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at Aspirus Hospice House.
She was born on June 12, 1931 in Stratford to the late Walter and Ellen (Raliegh) Dhein. Joan was united in marriage to Gerald Hornung on January 27, 1951 in Stratford, and together they had five children. In addition to loving and providing for her family, Joan worked at a few places over the years including J.C. Penney, Famous Footwear, and the health care center. She always enjoyed interacting with the residents and the conversations that followed. She retired when she reached the age of 70. Joan enjoyed reading, soaking up the sun on the patio, traveling, and loved the companionship of her dog, Louie.
Survivors include her children, James Hornung, Jean (William) Lau, Thomas (Kim) Hornung, and Patricia (Glenn) Norton; grandchildren, Laura Marinelli, Melissa Hintz, Tammi Perkins, Sarah Melby, Billy Lau, Jennifer Hoeppner, Matthew Hornung, Stephanie Hornung, Dan Norton, and Emily Plumb; 18 great-grandchildren and soon to be 20; a great-great-grandchild due this summer; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; daughter, Diane; and sisters, Shirley Kelm and Edith Steiner.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2025 at Holy Name Catholic Church, 1104 South Ninth Avenue, Wausau, with Rev. Samuel Martin presiding. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service, all at the church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Marathon. Online condolences may be expressed at www.petersonkraemer.com.
