Jerome (Jerry) Welzien, 81, Athens, formerly of Grafton, WI found peace on Tuesday, August 7, 2001.
He was born in Kewauskum, WI on September 24, 1919 to the late Joseph and Rose (nee Wick) Welzien. Jerome moved to Grafton in 1928 and joined the volunteer fire department in 1935. He was also a member of the Rose Harms Legion Post 355 in Grafton and later Legion Post #4 in Athens, WI after entering the Army on April 18, 1941. He served with the 32nd division military police and was stationed in England. He also served in Patton's Army in France and took part in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He returned home in October 1945.
While living in Grafton he worked at Jungers Stove and Range for 10 years. He was also employed at American Can Company, Milwaukee from 1952 until retiring to the Athens area in 1979.
Survivors include two daughters: Carolyn Nimmons, Grafton, Margaret "Peg" (Robert) Wolff, Wausau, one son:Thomas Welzien, Brookfield, One granddaughter: Abbe, Seattle, WA., two sisters: Imelda (Rubin) Dorau, Athens, and Delores (Ray) Link, Star Lake. He is also survived by special friend and cousin LeRoy Piel, Waukesha, WI and special loved-one, Josephine Voss, Athens, and many nieces and nephews.
Jerome was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald and Gordon.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 11, 2001 at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 312 Caroline St., Athens. Rev. Charles Hiebl will preside. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Athens. Friends may call on Saturday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of services at the Athens Funeral Home.
In a lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed for Macular Degeneration Research.
