Jerome Scheel

January 17, 1941 — March 25, 2010

Jerome "Jerry" Scheel 69, Rothschild, died Thursday, March 25, 2010 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at his home. Jerry was a loving husband and proud father who was always ready with a smile and a laugh. He was kind, generous and fun-loving. He was never too busy to help a neighbor, tell a joke or hug you twice goodbye. He lifted our spirits with his sunny attitude and has taught us the meaning of joy. Jerry was born the fourth child of seven on January 17, 1941 in Granville Township, Milwaukee County, son of the late William C. and Katherine (Matuszak) Scheel. He moved to the Town of Easton in the Wausau area at the age of four and attended the Easton Elementary one-room schoolhouse. He attended Wausau High School and graduated from Newman High School in 1960. On October 29, 1966 he married Marilyn Burger at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. Jerry proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Muliphen AKA-61. After the military, he worked in Appleton at Fox Valley Truck Service until 1979. He then moved back to the Wausau area and worked at Northern NationaLease until 1999. He retired from Wausau Brick and Gypsum in 2004. Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling, spending time in Minocqua, Wisconsin at the cottage, and dogsitting. He felt that time spent with his family and many friends was the best that life could give. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, St. Mark's Church and American Legion Roy Drew Post No. 492, Rothschild. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn, Rothschild; two daughters, Debra (Kirk) Sumner, Savage, Minn and Julie (Paul) Pokorny, Lombard, Ill.; two grandchildren, Duncan and Gabby Sumner; five siblings, James (Bernice) Scheel, Wausau, Barbara (Al) Marx, Ringle, Kathy Ott, Reedsburg, Cindy (Neal) Schalow, Rothschild and Dennis Scheel, Wausau; one sister-in-law, Edna Scheel, Weston and many other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his oldest brother and fellow troublemaker William Scheel. The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 29, 2010 at St. Mark Catholic Church, Rothschild. The Rev. Allan L. Slowiak will preside. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Kronenwetter. Friends may call Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 6th Street, Wausau and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Jerry's long struggle with cancer was made easier by the loving care and support of many special people, including his best friend Bob Tetzlaff and neighbors Ron and Kathy Lamb, among others. The family appreciates the fantastic care he received from all of the staff at Aspirus Hospice Services and Cancer Center, especially the care of Dr. Chris Peterson. I pray that I may live to fish until my dying day. And when it comes to my last cast, I then must humbly pray, When in my Lord's great landing net I'm peacefully asleep, That in his mercy I be judged Big enough to keep.
