Jean A. (Altenburg) Witzeling, 92, Wausau passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving and caring family.

She was born September 29, 1932 in Knowlton, WI, daughter of the late Glenn and Margaret (Konieczko) Altenburg.  On April 22, 1954 she married Claude F. Witzeling at St. Paul Catholic Church, Mosinee.  He preceded her in death on April 26, 2018.

Upon graduating from Mosinee High School on May 29, 1950 Jean started working at a grocery store as a cashier.  About a year later, she started working at Mosinee Paper Mill as a secretary to the personnel director.  In September 1954, Jean and Claude moved to San Diego, CA where Jean worked as a secretary for KAY LAB.  In May of 1957 they moved back to Wausau and Jean started working as a bookkeeper at First American National Bank.

After working at the bank Jean took the endeavor of staying home and raising her children while her husband Claude was involved in running the family business.  During those years Jean pursed further education at NTC and became a Wausau Hospital Volunteer. She served in the surgical waiting room for 30 years. She was President of the Wausau Hospital Volunteers for two years and served as Chairman of the North Central District for three years.  Jean was a member of the Marathon County Genealogical Society, Wausau Catholic Women’s Club, and Wausau Christian Women’s Club. She loved to travel and visited 34 different states throughout the United States and 16 foreign countries.  Some of her favorite hobbies included sewing, genealogy and gardening.  Jean also enjoyed music and dancing.

Survivors include her children, Brian  (Dawn) Witzeling, Wausau, Diane  (Neil) Shockey, Glendora, CA,  and Robert  Witzeling, Weston, her grandchildren, Jason (Ashley) Witzeling, Matthew (Kelly Wachtl) Witzeling, Amanda (Shockey) Turner and Megan (Shockey) Arellano, her great grandchildren, Addison Witzeling, Avery Witzeling, and Charles Witzeling, her sisters, Marjorie Geary, Peggy Kraklow, LaVonne (Elmer) Finck and Rita (Les) Bergstrom and 33 nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Janice (Edward) Rindfleisch, Glenwyn (Martin) Johnson and Gail (Robert) Arlen, and grandson Joseph Witzeling.

Pallbearers will be Jason Witzeling, Matthew Witzeling, Michael Rindfleisch, Timothy Witzeling, Eric Finck, and Neil Shockey.

Honorary Pallbearers are Amanda Turner, Megan Arellano, and Bruce Maciejewski.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2024 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 229 S. 28th Ave., Wausau. The Rev. Robert Thorn and Rev. Sebastian J. Kolodziejczk will preside.  Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Mosinee.  Visitation will be held Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 4-7 pm. in the Angelorum at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 229 S. 28th Ave., Wausau and 1 hour before the funeral Mass which will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Matthew Catholic Church, Wausau.  Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Wausau is in charge of arrangements.
