Jean D. Galloway
of Wausau, formerly of Alexandria, Va., died Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at Sylvan Crossings on Evergreen Road, Wausau.
She was born September 23, 1923 in Chicago, Ill., daughter of the late Walter and Effie Davidson. On January 29, 1949, she married John Galloway in Washington, D.C. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1970.
After graduating from the University of Maryland in 1944, Jean served in the O.S.S. as a cryptographer in India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) until 1945. After returning to the United States, she worked in the field of design and art. During her husband's career as a professor of Art History, she resided in many university communities, including Washington, D.C., Tuscaloosa, Ala., Berlin, Germany, Carbondale, Ill. and Detroit, Mich. An accomplished cook and hostess, she often entertained friends and faculty members. After the unexpected passing of her husband, she set out on a new career path, which included a position with the Treasury Department as a sky marshal, earning a Marksman certificate. Her career concluded as Director of the Office of Consumer Affairs in Arlington, Va. After retirement in 1986, she traveled the world, including India, Nepal, Indonesia, Japan, the Middle East, Europe and the Caribbean.
Survivors include, her daughter, Pamela (Christopher Magiera) Galloway, Wausau; her son, Spence Galloway, Springfield, Va.; and nieces and nephews.
The family thanks the staff of Aspirus Wausau Hospital, University of Wisconsin Cancer Center, Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and Sylvan Crossings.
A memorial service will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
