He was preceded in death by his parents, Freda and Vern McHale, and his brother, John McHale.
Jim was born on May 2, in Antigo, Wisconsin. As a young boy, he cherished time spent fishing and golfing at the family cabin on Bass Lake. At the age of 12, Jim experienced the sudden loss of his father. His mother, Freda, remained in Antigo, supported by close friends and the St. John’s Parish community. Jim excelled academically and graduated from Antigo High School in 1955.
He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin–Madison, earning a bachelor’s degree in History in 1959, a master’s degree in 1962, and a Ph.D. in American Foreign Policy in 1970. While at Madison, under The Reserve Forces Act of 1955, Jim served in the Wisconsin Army Reserves from 1958-1966 and received the rank of Captain. He was also active in campus life and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
Jim began his teaching career at UW - Fox Valley Center in 1964 and, in 1969, accepted a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. While at UWGB, he directed the Native American Studies program for two years and contributed to numerous historical publications on Wisconsin history.
In 1974, Jim and Maggie moved to Lily, Wisconsin, where they learned to operate a sheep farm. During this time, Jim transitioned careers and became a stockbroker with Smith Barney, while continuing to teach evening courses at UW–Green Bay.
Jim’s greatest passions were cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall and fly fishing on the Wolf and Hunting Rivers. Jim and Maggie also shared a love of travel and spent many years exploring South America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. They also spent 30 years enjoying summers with family and friends at their cabin in Three Lakes.
In 2002, Jim and Maggie sold the farm and moved to Wausau to be closer to family. Jim spent his final years surrounded by close friends and loved ones. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In accordance with his wishes, a private burial will be held. Online condolences may be shared @ www.petersonkraemer.com
