Herman A. "Dewey" Schulz Jr., 76, Edgar, died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at his home. "Dewey", as we all knew him, died peacefully on a warm spring afternoon with his son William nearby.
Dewey was born May 9, 1926 in Ripon, son of the late Dr. Herman A. and Jeanette (Kidnay) Schulz Sr.
Dewey enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 7, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. He served in Patton's Third Army, 76th Division, 417th Infantry, Company D, as a heavy machine gunner. PFC Schulz served in battle and was decorated for duties performed in Germany and the European Theatre. Upon his return to stateside, he was honorably discharged on April 12, 1946 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.
After he served his country, Dewey briefly attended Marquette University in Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He married Ruth Leah Davies, December 27, 1950 at St. James Catholic Church in Wausau. She preceded him in death in 1996. On April 3, 1953 their only son, William Schulz was born. On December 12, 1987 in La Crosse, Dewey was ordained a Deacon and served his parish of St. John Catholic Church, Edgar.
Dewey worked for the United States Post Office, as a mail carrier for 32 years; he also was a successful dairy farmer in the town of Cassel for approximately 20 years. He served on the Marathon County Board, was Chairman of the Wisconsin Airport Commission, was on the Board of Directors at North Central Health Care Center and was inducted into the Edgar High School Alumni Hall of Fame in 1999. He was an active member of the American Legion, Sawyer Drum Post 393 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. As an active outdoorsmen, Dewey enjoyed game fishing and bow hunting up until his last week of life.
Besides his son, William, he is survived by two sisters, Nancy Schulte, Milwaukee and Mary Lew, Tulsa, Ok., one brother, John Schulz, Harshaw; loving friend, Lisa Nowack, Minnesota; faithful friend and companion, Smax; many nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m., Monday, June 3, 2002 at St. John Catholic Church, Edgar. The Rev. Bernard Raschke will preside. Friends may call from 3 p.m., Monday until the time of service at the Church. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. John Catholic School Education Trust fund, Edgar.
