Henry "Duluth" Cherek
84, Wausau, died Saturday March 5, 2005 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
He was born October 21, 1920 in Bevent, son of the late Leo Sr. and Helen (Kedrowski) Cherek. On September 27, 1947 he married Edna Barden at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives.
Henry had been employed at the former Curtis Co., Wausau for 15 years then was employed at the former Drott Mfg., Schofield and for several years, he drove truck for Detjens Trucking. Edna and Henry owned and operated "Cherek's Windy Hill Bar" for 22 years. He enjoyed snowmobiling and fishing.
During World War II, Henry served his country in the US Army. He was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post No. 388, Wausau and a was a Life Member of the American Legion, Roy Drew Post No. 492, Rothschild.
Survivors include his wife, Edna, Wausau, a daughter, Karen (Richard) Rhyner, Wausau. He is further survived by his grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as "Popsie". They include a grandson, Al (Janine) Abt, Birnamwood, and their children, Anthony and Samantha;three granddaughters, Kay (Robbie) Resch, Birnamwood, and their son, Kodie;Connie (Kip) Johnson, Hampton, Vir.; Cassie Rhyner, Wausau;two step grandsons, Tim Rhyner, Houston, Minn; Dan(Kim)Rhyner, Winona, Minn., and their children, Gage, Cody and Karie;two sisters, Bertha Omernick, Bevent; Irene (Raymond) Bricco, Minocqua;one brother, Leo Jr. (Marlene) Cherek, Bevent; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Henry was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Ostrowski and a brother, Daniel Cherek.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday March 8, 2005 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wausau. Entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Monday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish rosary service at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the Sixth Street funeral Home.
