Harvey A. Smith, a beloved father, grandfather (“Papa”), and friend, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, at the age of 74. A resident of Elmhurst, IL, Harvey lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering dedication to his family.
Born on November 3, 1950, Harvey grew up with a love for learning and an inquisitive spirit. He earned a BCS from Northern Illinois University and later pursued an MBA from Northwestern Illinois University. Harvey’s successful career as a software engineer spanned 45 years. He also shared his knowledge and passion by teaching part-time at Elmhurst College. Harvey retired in September 2024.
Harvey married Janet Loek in 1973. They built a life centered around their children and later their grandchildren, creating years of cherished memories. They remained married until Janet's passing on May 16, 2016. Their legacy lives on through their five children and eight grandchildren. Harvey is survived by daughter Jenna (Jason) Little of Wausau, WI, grandchildren James and McKenzi; son Ryan (Lori) Smith of Winfield, IL, grandchildren Jack, Nina, and Leona; daughter Kaitlin Smith of Lisle, IL; son Zachary (Lauren) Smith of Naperville, IL, grandchildren Julian, Mira, and Elliott; and son Kyle Smith of Villa Park, IL. Harvey's family was his greatest joy.
He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, treasuring the annual family vacations they shared. As "Papa," he delighted in being able to help babysit his grandchildren, creating lasting memories with them through laughter, games, or simply enjoying their company.
Harvey had a passion for history, reading books about past wars and the innovations that shaped our past and present. He was a lifelong Beatles fan and loved movies, which he shared with his family. An avid DIY’er, Harvey completed intricate carpentry works such as a multi-level backyard deck and a spectacular two-story playground for his children, which included a zip line, chain-link bridge, and fireman pole. A familiar face at Rainbow Restaurant in Elmhurst, he enjoyed breakfast there several days of the week for years. A quiet and reserved personality, his visits to Rainbow Restaurant brought him “out of his shell” and he looked forward to the cheerful greetings and friendly banter. Harvey was a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he and Janet were married, and their children were baptized. His faith was very important and a daily source of enrichment.
Harvey will be remembered for his gentle and humble nature, his selflessness, patience, and unwavering love. He touched countless lives and leaves behind a legacy of warmth, wisdom, and the reminder to cherish the simple joys of life. Harvey’s love and light will live on in our hearts.
A memorial and celebration of Harvey's life will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elmhurst, IL, on February 8, 2025, with visitation from 10-11 AM, service at 11:00, followed by an on-site luncheon. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Jude Children’s hospital. Online condolences may be expressed at www.petersonkraemer.com.
