Gary Raymond McCartan Sr., 76, of Fitchburg, WI, formerly of Wausau WI, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 17, 2025. Gary was born on December 18, 1948 in Wauwatosa, WI, to the late Audrey Mae (Kegal) and Raymond Anthony McCartan.
He graduated from Wauwatosa East High School in 1967 and went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he graduated in 1971. Gary then continued his education in Washington, D.C. at Georgetown Law School, receiving his law degree in 1974. While in school at the University of Wisconsin, Gary was an active member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity where he served as president of both the fraternity and the inter-fraternity council.
Gary moved to Wausau, WI in 1976 where he was the general counsel for Wausau Homes. He then went on to establish McCartan law office.
He was an avid football fan and enjoyed rooting on his beloved Badgers and Green Bay Packers. He was active in youth sports in Wausau coaching Pop Warner Football and Little League Baseball. Gary loved being a coach, mentor, and good friend to many people throughout Wausau.
Gary will be forever remembered by his wife, Susan (Keskey); children, Amanda Ann, Gary Raymond Jr., and Michael James (Erin); grandchildren, Madison, Jack, Adanna, Jadyn, Owen, and Mila; great-grandchildren, Marley and Willow; sister, Gayle (McCartan) Schmitz Zien; brother, Thomas Scott (Dolly) McCartan; many nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey and Raymond McCartan.
The visitation will be on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Joy Nelson-Jeffers officiating. Private family burial will take place in Restlawn Memorial Park. Online condolences may be expressed at www.petersonkraemer.com.
