Frederick V. Zimmermann,
95, Rhinelander, formerly of Wausau and Zephyrhills, Florida, died Thursday, September 24, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander.
He was born September 7, 1914, in the town of Easton, son of the late Fred W. and Pearl (Kunhert) Zimmermann. On August 17, 1940, he married Margaret Swendsen, who preceded him in death in 1984. On February 28, 1986, he married Phyllis Thurman. She survives.
Agriculture and the outdoors were always part of Fred's life. He farmed in the town of Easton until moving to Wausau in 1952, where he worked for Midland Cooperative until his retirement in 1979. He was an avid camper, traveler, and card player. Other favorite occupations included spending time with family, taking daily walks, conversations with friends, telling a good joke, and listening to an old-fashioned thunderstorm from his screened porch in Florida.
Survivors include his wife Phyllis; one daughter, Ruth Ann O'Neil, Rhinelander; two sons, Paul (Margaret) Zimmermann, Walnutport, PA, and Robert (Barbara) Zimmermann, Kronenwetter; one son-in-law, Richard Skrukrud Wausau; two sisters-in- law, Geraldine (Adolph) Zimmermann, Wausau, and Margaret (Albert) Zimmermann, Colorado Springs, CO; 11 grandchildren, Troy (Kristy) Juedes and Craig (Jodi) Juedes, both of Rhinelander, Jeff Juedes, Tomahawk, Amy Thomson and Chris (Jennifer) Zimmermann, both of Northhampton, PA, Jenny (Michael) Laury, Bath, PA, Mike Rowe, South Dakota, Matt (Jaime) Zimmermann, Weston, Sara Zimmermann, Kronenwetter, Jeremy (Renee) Zimmermann, Chicago, Il, and Erin Zimmermann, Green Bay; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife Margaret, he was preceded in death by daughter Carol (Richard) Skrukrud; brothers Rufus, Hilton, Adolph, Wilbert, Albert, and John Zimmermann, and one sister, Lenora Deutsch.
Fred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who placed God and family above all else. His legacy of hard work, simple Christian values, sense of humor, and strength in the face of misfortune will be held close in the hearts of his children and grandchildren, and will forever influence all who knew him.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church, 709 6th Street, Wausau. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau.
Friends may call Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services all at the church.
