Evelyn M. Buchberger
93, formerly of Marathon, died Saturday October 18, 2003 at Wausau Manor Nursing Home.
She was born September 17, 1910, daughter of the late John and Magdalene (Uebelacker) Sonnentag. Evelyn was a 1929 graduate of Marathon High School. On July 8, 1940 she married Norbert Buchberger at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. He preceded her in death February 18, 1996.
Evelyn worked as a clerk at Silverman's Store in Marathon. After her marriage to Norbert, their first business venture was Buck's Tavern in Halder. They later owned and operated the Marathon Bowling Lanes and were ginseng growers for 40 years. For many years, Evelyn also worked at the Rib River Ballroom.
A lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon, Evelyn was also a member of the Parish Council of Catholic Women and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She was a 35 year member of the Hillcrest Homemakers Club and had been a volunteer at the former Marathon Nutrition Center.
She enjoyed flower gardening and was talented in crocheting and needlework. Evelyn enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining family and friends. She bowled for many years as a member of the Stueber Dairy Bowling Team.
Survivors include her daughter Janice Deininger and her son-in-law, Thomas Deininger, Marathon, two grandchildren, Heidi (Jim) Kinney, Verona and Timothy Deininger, Wausau, a sister, Catherine Scholl, Wausau, a brother, Merlin (Elaine) Sonnentag, Marathon, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Martin, Stevens Point, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Lynn Marie Deininger and Daniel Deininger.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at noon Thursday October 23, 2003 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
Pallbearers for the service will be, Tim Deininger, Jim Kinney, Jack Sonnentag, Pat Buchberger, Claude Buchberger and David Martin.
Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon, is in charge of arrangements.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to all the staff at Wausau Manor who loved and cared for Evelyn these past six years.
