Eugene W. Kumbera, 92, Wausau, died Friday November 21, 2014 at North Central Health Care Facilities, Wausau.
He was born May 24, 1922, in Wausau, son of the late John and Hulda (Wagner) Kumbera. In 1941, Eugene had been employed at Underwood Veneer Company and was a member of the Rib Mountain Ski Patrol.
In 1942 he was drafted into the US Army during World War II. His artillery division was involved in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily, Salerno and Anzio, Italy as well as service in France and Germany. Among several commendations he received was the Purple Heart. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Wausau and on June 1, 1946, married Angeline Boerke.
Prior to his retirement, Eugene had been employed as an engine worker with the Milwaukee Road Railroad and had been employed for over 30 years at the former American Can Corporation as a machine operator. Among his favorite past times were doing yardwork, his pets, working on his model train display and spending time at the cottage he built on Silver Lake. Eugene and his Angeline were avid Packer fans through the years.
Survivors include three children, Mary Jo (James) Tilton, Wausau, Jeanne (Stan) Coppins, Sun City, Ariz., Jon (Kathy) Kumbera, Wausau, 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one brother, Robert (Cookie) Kumbera, Weston.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Kumbera and a sister, Avery Knuth.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday December 5, 2014 at the Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Rev. Alan T. Burkhardt will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post No. 388. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, and again on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
