Elmer E. Romang, 94, of Wausau, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Wausau Manor under the care of North Shore Hospice.

He was born in Granton, Wisconsin, on March 13, 1932, to the late Ted Schalle and Anita Garbisch. Elmer graduated from Athens High School and then served in the Marine Corps active duty beginning in 1954 until 1957, during the Korean conflict. After returning from his service, he married Christine Engstrom at St. Michael Catholic Church in Wausau on June 20, 1959.

Elmer worked for many years as a master printer at American Can and the James River Corporation. Outside of his work, Elmer was heavily involved with area youth through Scouting. He was involved with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts over the years. During that time, he oversaw four Eagle Scouts, received the Boy Scouts distinguished award, was a roundtable commissioner, and lead scouting trips including to New Mexico. He was also a member of the Man of Honor Society. Elmer enjoyed deer hunting and traveling with his family and friends. Over the years he and his family traveled to many states and national parks with their camper, and also to Germany. When winter moved in every year, they would make their way to Gulf Shores to stay out of the Wisconsin cold.

Survivors include his wife, Christine; children, Samuel, Andrew, Dr. Timothy, and William “Bill”; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many close cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Ted Schalle; and mother and stepfather, Anita and Emanuel Romang.
