Elaine Grosskopf (nee Sell) died peacefully in Wausau on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at the age of 92 after a brief illness.
She was born on July 17, 1925, in Wausau, daughter of the late Hildagard and August Ferdinand Sell. She started school in a one room schoolhouse at Lone Maple School in Fairbanks, Wisconsin and graduated from Tigerton High School in 1942. She worked for Montgomery Ward Catalog Stores as a credit manager and store manager at stores in the Chicago area, Stillwater, Minnesota and finally in Wausau. There she met Elmer Grosskopf and they were married in July of 1962.
She enjoyed being a homemaker and volunteering at Rib Mountain School as room mother. She was active in her church in the Welfare Workers, quilters group and even in her later years served as president of the Welfare Workers at Trinity Lutheran Church on Stewart. Elaine had many talents including sewing, crocheting, knitting, bowling and golf. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and thought grandma could cook anything better than anyone else! They also counted on her to fix or mend anything, including many alterations of Emily's dance costumes and Paul's theater costumes over the years. Elaine had a wonderful sense of humor and loved nothing more than cooking and hosting family and friends for holidays and get togethers in her home. Elaine truly loved her grandchildren, Daniel Wetzel, Emily Grosskopf (Madison) and Paul Grosskopf (DeKalb, Ill.) and enjoyed reading to them and spending lots of time with them throughout the years. She loved playing cards, especially Sheepshead (Schafkopf) and spades, doing crossword puzzles and reading.
Survivors include her sons, Brian (Mary Kay) Grosskopf, Wausau and Craig (Lisa) Wetzel, Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, Paul and Emily Grosskopf and Daniel Wetzel; sister-in-law, Diane Sell and her best friend and sister-in-law, Esther Miller, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer Grosskopf, brothers and sisters, Eugene, Muriel (Fred) Bruss, Joan (Eugene) Seefeldt and Wally and Wilbert Sell.
A celebration of Elaine's life will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 501 Stewart Avenue, Wausau. Rev. Zach Holdorf will officiate.
