Edwin P. Szuminski
78, Marathon, died Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at North Central Health Care Center, Wausau.
He was born August 23, 1933 in the town of Cassel, son of the late Frank and Helen (Gajewski) Szuminski. On October 3, 1959 he married Joyce Kienbaum at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, town of Cassel. She survives. Edwin and Joyce just recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.
For more than 30 years Edwin worked at Harnischfeger Corporation in Milwaukee. After his retirement Edwin and Joyce moved back to Marathon. Some of his favorite pastimes included gardening, taking his grandchildren fishing and listening to polkas on the radio. Edwin was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and also a proud supporter of all the different types of Marathon High School sports. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends as being a "Jack of all Trades"; always saying, "If it's broke let me take a look at it!"
Edwin proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Szuminski, Marathon, two children, Donna (Bob) Makowski and Perry (Paulette) Szuminski, both of Menominee Falls, five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ben) Blader, Monica and Rebecca Makowski and Jessica and Nathan Szuminski, his siblings, Jolanta (Frank) Jagodzinski, Edgar, Sylvian (Gloria) Szuminski, Hancock and Virginia Szuminski, Marathon. Edwin is further survived by his sister-in-law, Jeanette (Donald) Wagner, Marshfield, brothers-in-law LeRoy Kienbaum, Rothschild and Richard (Elaine) Kienbaum, Waupaca along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. The Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, town of Cassel where full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Alois Dreikosen Post #469, Marathon. Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon and again on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at the Marathon funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church or St. Anthony Retreat Center.
