Edwin "Eddie" L. McAuliffe, 77, Wausau, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at his home. He was born April 7, 1937 in Owensboro, Kentucky, son of the late Aland and Violet (Miller) McAuliffe. On October 18, 1996 he married Hazel Hagemann at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau. She survives. Eddie was a retired Army officer, retiring on March 31, 1975 with 21 years' service. During his service career he spent three years in the United States Marines followed by 18 years in the United States Army. He spent a total of eight years overseas with one year in Iceland, four years in Germany, 13 months in Korea and two years in South Vietnam. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Burns Post No. 388, Wausau, member of the American Legion Alois Dreikosen Post No. 469, Marathon, and life member of Military Officers Association of America. He was also a member of the Atomic Veterans of America having taken part in an atomic air-ground exercise in March 1955 at the Atomic Commission Proving Ground Camp Desert Rock, Nevada. During this time he was with the 3rd Marine Corps Provisional Atomic Exercise Brigade. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Hagemann, Wausau; daughters, Debra (Jeffrey) McAuliffe-Neuens, Lake Mills, Dawn McAuliffe, Wausau and Dena (Travis) Suchon, Mosinee; step-children, Lisa (Steve) Belanger, Wausau and John (Trina) Hagemann, Stoughton; grandchildren, Tuesday (fiancAC. Scott Staehler) McAuliffe, Madeleine Neuens and PFC Jack Neuens; step-grandchild, Bailey Belanger; brother, Michael (Theresa) McAuliffe, Keokuk, Iowa; sisters, Rose (Chester) Sellers and Lillie Commodore, both of Lexington, Kentucky, other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel McAuliffe and a brother, Elmo McAuliffe. The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau. Full military honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Burns Post No. 388, Wausau, following the Mass. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Merrill. Friends may call Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services all at the church. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Tom and Karen, Rob and Becky, Dr. Haque and the staff at the Marshfield Clinic Oncology for all the kind, compassionate care given to Edwin.
