Edward A. Hoerter went to his eternal home Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at his home under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
Edward was born May 3, 1917 in Westfield, Wis., son of the late Michael and Ida (Zander) Hoerter. He moved to Wausau in 1918 and married Ada Froehlich in October 1940. She passed away in February 1973. Ed married Elizabeth (Mathwick) Wirt in June of 1974. She survives.
Ed was instrumental in starting Union Local #1594 Carpenters and Joiners of America in the late 30's. He was supervisor of maintenance at the Wausau City Hall from which he retired in 1982. He was a charter member of the Wausau City Employees Credit Union.
Ed was a veteran of World War II, having served in Iran as a Sergeant in the Military Police for three years. He was an active member of Burns Post #388 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wausau. He served as Post Commander and was a member of the Last Man's Club and Honor Guard. He was Post Chaplain for 14 years and also District Chaplain. His hobbies were woodworking, bowling, and church activities.
Survivors include his wife Betty, Wausau; three sons, Lyle (Judith) Hoerter, DelRay Beach, Fla. and Greenwood, Wis., Lon (Lucy) Hoerter, Wausau, Charles (Jaynee) Hoerter, Wausau; a daughter Audrey (Randal) Oldenberg, Mosinee; two step-daughters, Lynnette (Richard) Simmons, Speedway, Ind., Sally (Stuart) Gartmann, Kronenwetter; nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Art, Bill, Otto, and Cliff; and sisters, Romona and Edna.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau. The Rev. Dennis W. Pegorsch will officiate. Burial will be in the Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, with full military honors performed by the VFW Post #388. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, and again Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. There will be a VFW memorial service 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may directed to Trinity Lutheran Building Fund, Comfort Care and Hospice Services, or the charity of your choice.
