Edmund D. Stenzel
82, Wausau, died Thursday May 21, 2009 at Wausau Manor Nursing Home.
He was born March 23, 1927, in Athens, son of the late Jacob and Anna (Soczka) Stencil. On May 15, 1948, he married Jeanette Koy at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives.
Ed was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific and on Okinawa. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post No. 388, Wausau. For over 40 years, he had been employed at the former Wausau Iron Works and later had been engaged as a hearse coordinator for Karth Livery and Central Wisconsin Services for nearly 30 years.
As a charter member of St. Anne Parish, Wausau, he served the church as a Eucharistic Minister and was a charter usher. Ed thouroughly enjoyed his involvement with the annual Polka Fest as well as keeping an eye on all the parish activities from their backyard patio. He was an avid Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers fan as well as an active bowler in the KC League attending many State Tournaments.. One of his favorite pastimes was music, especially playing the accordion, which he did often in his basement for parties, up north at the cottages of friends and for entertainment of residents at Marywood Convalescent Center. In their younger years, Ed and Jeanette enjoyed playing golf, square dancing and traveling.
Among his many involvements, Ed was a life member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus George Schreier Council No. 1069, Wausau, the Wausau Elks Lodge, the St. Thomas More Club at St. Anne Parish and he had also been the original advisor to the Explorers of Boy Scout Troop No. 427.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette (Koy) Stenzel, Wausau, one brother, Marvin (Ruth) Stencil, Wausau, nieces, Karen (Geoff) Krause, Wausau, Darlene (Jerry) Mueller, Milwaukee, nephews, Jim Majeske, Wausau, Randy (Gay) Stencil, Wausau, Dale (Kim) Brinkman, Wausau, Darrell (Jill) Brinkman, Wausau, Bob (Sue) Riehle, Schofield, Jim Riehle, Ohio, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ed was preceded in death by an infant brother, Alvin, a brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Katie Majeske and a nephew, Richard Majeske.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday May 25, 2009 at the Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Rev. Steven Brice will preside. Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military rites will be conducted by members of the VFW Honor Guard. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:30 p.m. and an Elks Lodge of Sorrow at 7:00 p.m. all on Sunday at the Sixth Street funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
