Duane R. Cumberland

Duane R. "Dewey" Cumberland 78, 1010 Stark Street, Wausau died Friday, June 27, 2008 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born February 23, 1930 in Brokaw, son of the late Arthur and Martha (Stralavage) Cumberland. On January 14, 1950 he married Jane Kleinheinz at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives. Prior to retiring at Marathon Press, Dewey worked at Wausau Papers for more than 20 years. The love between Dewey and the love of his life Janie lasted 58 A½ years. In the earlier years they had a love of dancing together and would go to waltz and polka their Saturday nights away and never missed a Saturday night until the birth of their first child. Another one of Dewey's pastimes was coin collecting. Spending time with family was extremely important to Dewey and he loved to cook, which is a love he passed down to several of his children. He especially enjoyed sharing stories of his youth with his grandchildren, and he also enjoyed taking an occasional trip to the casino. Dewey proudly served his country in the National Guard. Survivors include his wife, Jane Cumberland, Wausau, his children, Tom Cumberland, Wauzeka, Russ (Lisa) Cumberland, Sarasota, Florida, Mark (Carrie Koski) Cumberland, Green Bay, Robert (Barbara) Cumberland, Jacksonville, North Carolina, Barbara (Bob) West, Goodman, Lynn Schauer, Wausau and Kay (Dale) Knapp, Merrill, his grandchildren, Stephanie West, Kim and Dan Schauer, Cody and Clarissa Knapp, Kori, Kala, Markus, Malcolm and Tara Cumberland and Maria Santos and one great grandchild. Pallbearers will be Bob West, Dale Knapp, Joel Schauer and Tom Lopuszynski. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur "Buddy" Cumberland and his sisters, Mildred "Micki" Zimick, Alvina "Sally" Martin, Cecelia Leonard and Janet Radtke. The funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wausau. The Rev. William Grevatch and The Rev. Joseph Kleinheinz will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the Sixth Street funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the Cumberland Family requests that donations be made in Duane's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
