Dr. Alfred Beulig Junior, 85, passed away peacefully at Aspirus Hospice House in Wausau, Wisconsin. His battle with ALS ended on August 13, 2026. Alfred was born in Berlin, Germany, on August 1, 1941.
Alfred was a Renaissance man with many accomplishments and passions. He received his PhD from New York University and became a professor of biology at New College of Florida for 43 years. He taught his students well and mentored them with rigor. His impact was felt far beyond the classroom, and his influence charted a life course of success for many of his students. Alfred developed a program of outdoor learning with the study of coral reefs. He felt hands-on and independent research fostered the love of learning in his students. He traveled extensively to places like American Samoa, Belize, and spent 20 years with the Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation (ITEC) in Bocas del Toro, Panama. He also did collaborative research on Hagfish in New Zealand and Australia. Alfred always felt that his career as a professor was his true calling.
In addition, he was consumed by boats and planes. He was a model enthusiast as a child which developed into “the real thing” in adulthood. Alfred was involved in construction and renovation of sailboats. He sailed throughout Wisconsin and in Sarasota, Florida. His love of flying translated to participation in radio control airplane clubs and finally the actual construction of a SeaRey airplane.
Survivors include his sister Marie Beulig, brother Erich Beulig (Solange), nieces Rachel Brazalovich (Rick), Regine Kidd (Jaime), and Tamar Weber (John), nephews Rylan Jankauskas (Hillary) and Andy Beulig, and grand-niece Adaline.
My greatest appreciation to Dr. Lonnie Draper for his unfailing loyalty. You were first his student and you became a lifelong friend. He relied on you for your medical expertise, your kindness, and your companionship. Thank you.
I acknowledge Aspirus Hospice House for their gentle care, and all his caretakers that helped at his home. Also, to all his dear friends that loved him throughout his life.
