Donald Joseph Sturm
83, Wausau, died Saturday, December 2, 2006 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
He was born March 27, 1923 in Milwaukee, son of the late Henry W. and Hildegard (Grundle) Sturm. On September 21, 1946 Donald married Jean Kathryn Schaupp at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. They celebrated their 60th anniversary this past September. She survives.
Serving in the United States Army during World War II, he was stationed in Nome, Alaska and Los Alamos, New Mexico and worked with the development of the first atomic bomb. As a supervisor, he worked at the former Marathon Corporation, American Can and James River for 43 years.
Having a strong faith, commitment to the Catholic Church and devotion to his family, guided him throughout his life. One of his many activities was involvement in the Knights of Columbus George Schreier Council #1069, serving as the financial secretary, District Deputy and a Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Pere Rene Menard General Assembly #1449, Wausau. Other involvements include the Centurions of Aspirus Wausau Hospital, the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post #10, Wausau, Wausau Elks Lodge #248 and the Golden Kiwanis. Donald enjoyed Green Bay Packers football, Chicago Cubs baseball, golf, bowling, fishing, hunting and camping with his family. He also enjoyed traveling where he visited Europe, the Caribbean and Alaska but most especially he enjoyed the many trips to visit his daughter and sons in Oregon, Wisconsin and Montana.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Sturm, Wausau, three children, Linda Burger, Redmond, Ore., Jeffrey (Donna) Sturm, Helena, Mont., and Thomas (Susan) Sturm, Shawano; five grandchildren, Jason Burger, Redmond, Ore.,, Brook Sturm, Bozeman, Mont., Allison Sturm, Helena, Mont., Andrew Strum, Stevens Point and Benjamin Strum, Shawano; three great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Arlene Sturm, Ore., and brother-in-law, Robert (Joan) Schaupp, DePere, along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one brother Robert.
The Funeral mass will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau. Rev. William Grevatch will preside. Friends may call on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Chaplain Doug Tiffany, the caring staff of hospice and the Aspirus Wausau Hospital Palliative Care unit for their wonderful care and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Donald's name may be directed to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services or Newman High School.
