Dennis Sonnentag, a lifelong resident of Edgar, WI passed away at his home just 3 days after celebrating his 80th birthday with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marilyn (Schulz) Sonnentag (Edgar, WI); three daughters, Shellie Sonnentag (Brad Hompe, Stanley, WI), Angela Christianson (Andy Christianson, Stanley, WI), and Gina Knetter (Travis Knetter, Edgar, WI); seven grandchildren, Skylar May (Mason May, Stanley, WI), Bailey Turner (Zach Turner, St. George, UT), Austin Knetter (Kendra Knetter, Edgar, WI), Ethan Knetter (Edgar, WI), Ashlyn Ducommun (St. George, UT), Raegan Christianson (Stanley, WI) and Tegan Knetter (Edgar, WI); and eight great-grandchildren, Cameron, Clara, Crew, Butch, Blaine, Marlow, Charlie and Macy.
Dennis, aka “Skinny” Sonnentag was born and raised in Edgar, WI. He entered the US Air Force and was stationed in Topeka, KS where he met his future wife, Marilyn Schulz of Holton, KS. They married and eventually moved back to Edgar, Wisconsin where they raised their family. Dennis worked at Weyerhauser Paper Mill in Rothschild, WI until he retired. He also served on the volunteer fire department in Schofield, WI and was a member of the American Legion Post 393, Edgar, WI.
Dennis loved spending time hunting and fishing, with his favorite past-time being ice fishing with his girls and grandchildren. He also loved to bowl and golf, with his favorite golf memory of achieving a hole-in-one in 2018 at the Pine Valley Golf Course. He was an avid Wisconsin sports fan, rarely missing a Brewer or Packer game. If the Brew Crew or the Pack were not playing up to par, he would get quite riled, but nothing like when he spoke about politics. Dennis was so passionate about government affairs that he endured many months of “Facebook Jail” because of it!
He loved the community of Edgar, WI and being a lifelong parishioner at St. John’s Catholic Church. His greatest accomplishment in life (besides his epic hole-in-one) is the legacy he is leaving behind with his beloved family. They will never forget the spit-fire he was, the tales he spun, the patriotism he promoted, and the love they received.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 27, 2025 at St. John Catholic Church, Edgar. The Rev. Alan Wierzba will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services all at the church. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Edgar is on charge of arrangements.
