David E. Koehler, 58, of Wausau, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison. David had a bone marrow transplant for acute myeloid leukemia on July 31, 2013. His sister Barb was his bone marrow donor. His transplant was successful, achieving remission of the leukemia but he died of complications of pneumonia.
He was born on June 5, 1955 in Wausau, Wis. to Eugene and Lois (Luedtke) Koehler. On June 23, 1978 he married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Allman. David was employed with the Marathon County Highway Dept for 34 years, retiring in December 2011.
He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, always with a smile and a sense of humor. Along with Kathy and his children, they enjoyed camping and traveling with their pop-up camper, fishing, Nascar, a cold Dr. Pepper, crashing waves on Lake Superior, sunrises and sunsets, snowfalls and restoring vintage snowmobiles. He will always be remembered for his love of winter and riding with his snowmobile buddies. He was a member of the Trailmates Snowmobile Club. David had great pride in his children in all they've accomplished. He enjoyed golfing, baseball and snowmobile racing with Eric and 21 years of dance recitals with Emily.
He is survived by his wife Kathy of 35 years, two children; Eric (Megan Solinsky) Koehler, Wausau and Emily (Evan Thomas) Koehler, Madison; his parents, Eugene and Lois Koehler, Wausau; two sisters, Barb (Rick) Krautkramer, Marathon and their children, Scott (Renee) Krautkramer, Jason Krautkramer and Lisa (Brett Koeller) Krautkramer and Jane (Ross) Kroening, Wausau, their daughter, Sara (Eric) Edwardson and their daughters, Grace and Alice; two sisters-in-law, Sue (Barry) Zastrow and Judy (Dale Wittwer)Allman; five brothers-in-law, Jeff (Jean) Allman, John (Paulette) Allman, Joe (Cheryl) Allman, Tom (Cindy Sann) Allman and Rick (Michelle) Allman; his mother-in-law, Beth Allman, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and special friends. He was godfather to Lynn Moore, Jason Krautkramer and Erin Jung.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Donald Allman.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wausau. Rev. Nancy Russell will officiate. Friends may call on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.
