Davey Lee Matis, 53, of Marathon, was called by the Lord doing what he loved, being a logger, on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
He was born February 13, 1972 to the late Dale L. Matis, and Nancy A. (Schuster) Matis in Wausau. He later married the former Krista M. Grosskurth on July 15, 1995 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Wausau.
Davey was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. He was a man of God with a strong Catholic faith and moral compass. He treasured his family and enjoyed spending time with them utilizing his grilling skills preparing fish and steak. He prided himself on always being early and on time with everyone he met. Like his father, he was honest to a fault even when you didn’t want to hear it. He always lent a helping hand to all those in need, and supported charitable causes such as Empowered Dream Hunts, Unbound, and the Knights of Columbus where he served for 13 years, with the last two years as Grand Knight. Davey was gifted mechanically, he was a jack of all trades and could fix anything. Davey was an entrepreneur as both a logger and owner of Whitetails of a Lifetime. Davey enjoyed his best times outside as a woodsman and a true outdoorsman. He loved fishing and hunting, along with other outdoor recreational activities.
Survivors include his wife, Krista; daughter, Corrina (Jake) Sczygelski; sons, Joseph and Samuel Matis; grandchildren, Evelyn and Charlotte Sczygelski; brother, Paul (Lisa) Matis; sisters, Christy (Brian) Blenker, Lisa Rennie, and Cathy Jo Matis; nieces, Ashley (Brandon) Raikowski, Alisha Blenker; nephew, Andrew Blenker; great-nephew, Easton; great-niece, Athena; godmother, Marlene Spiegel; mother-in-law, Rosemary Grosskurth; brothers-in-law, Dale (Julie) Grosskurth, Neil, and Jeff Grosskurth; best friend, Tom Krieg; and his treasured truck companions, Cee-Cee and Wilma.
