Daniel "Dan" Gene Hommerding

September 22, 1953 — December 8, 2024

Daniel “Dan” G. Hommerding, 71, Weston, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 8, 2024 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

He was born September 22, 1953 in Wausau, son of the late Robert and Virginia (Delonay) Hommerding.  He worked in the plumbing wholesale business for most of his career.  After retiring, he worked part-time at the Shell gas station.  His hobbies included hunting, fishing, watching westerns, racing motorcycles (in his younger days), golfing (in his older days), shooting pool, flirting with every woman he saw, stockpiling toilet paper and bottled water, collecting used cottage cheese containers, and saving every card, wallet, and picture ever given to him.  He was a member of Man of Honor and participated in all of their events.  He was known for his funny shirts and his skills in the kitchen, especially his banana bread and refrigerator pickles.  He was always ready to help those in need – whether it be snow-blowing a driveway, lending money, or giving someone a ride somewhere or a place to stay.  Although he was quiet, he had many friends, as people were drawn to his sense of humor and to his integrity.

Dan was a role model and father figure to a group of his son’s friends in the neighborhood.  They held a special place in his heart, and he loved them like they were his own.  Many memories were made sitting by the campfire in his backyard or around his kitchen table talking and laughing for hours.  Now in their 20’s, these “kids” – Jon, Harly, Luis, Jordan, Mike, and Quintin – were there by his side along with his family when he passed away.

Survivors include five children, Angie Hommerding, Neenah, April (Chad Gilbertson) Hommerding, Weston, Jenna (Greg Pigeon) Hommerding, Green Bay, Heather (Justin) Hetzel, Hatley, and Bob (Krissy Hermanson) Hommerding, Marathon; ten grandchildren, Dani, Jaylen, Noah, Ari, Emery, Willow, Rose, Paige, Eli, and Skylee; his two ex-wives, Betty Gwidt and Tanya Mitchell; five siblings, Bob (Kathy) Hommerding, Wausau, Sheila (Izzy) Umlauft, Auburndale, Julie (Mike) Miller-O’Neal, Weston, Mary (Bob) Moser, Wausau, and Donna (Dane) Parker, Mosinee; one sister-in-law, Sissa Hommerding, Weston; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Hommerding; one grandson, Mason Grinwald; and two nephews, Troy Hommerding and Ace Miller.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, December 20, 2024 at St. Therese Catholic Church, Rothschild.  Rev. Joseph Albert will preside.  Burial will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Friday from 10:00 am until time of services at the church.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff on the Palliative Care Unit at Aspirus Wausau Hospital for the wonderful care and support for Dan and our family.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.petersonkraemer.com.
