Clarence 'Slim' Sydow
86, 909 Washington St., Wausau, died Tuesday February 5, 2002 as the result of a fall.
'Slim' was born June 30, 1915 in Wisconsin Rapids, son of the late Hugo and Minnie Sydow. He worked for over 40 years at the Milwaukee Road Railroad, retiring as ticket agent. On April 23, 1941 he married Margaret Burt in Iowa. She preceded him in death in 1977.
He served in the US Navy during World War II as a radioman aboard the USS Croatan CVE 25 and USS Glennon DD 620 from 1942 until 1945. As an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post No. 388, their Honor Guard and Last Man's Club, Slim also held numerous local, district and state offices in the VFW and had many national appointments as well. He was also a Life Member of the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau.
Survivors include four daughters, Sally (Ray) Sarlot, Los Angeles, Diana (Donald) Nickel, Wausau, Lynda (Lewis)Emmons, Seattle, Mary (Ken) Fisher, Wausau, Three sons, James (Pam Ketelle), Minocqua, Roger (Jean), Wausau, and Michael (Lynne), Wausau, 12 grandchildren, Gage Thompson, Kelly (Gary) Shanak, Andrew (Michelle) Thompson, all of Wausau, Eric and Mark Emmons, Seattle, Jennifer and Jeff Sydow, Arizona, Kyle Fisher, Wausau, Korey Fisher, Oshkosh, and his special grandchild, Keith Fisher, Wausau, also, Jonathan Sydow, Minnesota and Sarah Sydow, Wausau; he is also survived by several great-grandchildren, Andrea, Natasha, Samantha, Andrew Jakob and Balana Thompson, Nikki, Jackie and Jon Shanak and Alexandra Knott and by a great-great-grandchild, Calvin. He is also survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many loving nephews, nieces and a very special friend Virginia Sorenson and her family. Slim will be missed by the friends he made all over the country.
Services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 9, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church, Wausau. Rev. Bernadette Bruner will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park where full Military Honors will be conducted by members of the V.F.W. Honor Guard. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Friday at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Saturday from 9:00 until the time of services at the church. A V.F.W. Memorial Service is scheduled for 7 PM Friday at the Sixth Street funeral home.
