Clarence "Chi" Blake
72, McAllen, Texas, formerly of Athens, died Monday, October 2, 2006 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was born August 16, 1934 in International Falls, Minnesota, son of the late Clayton and Marlyss (Berryman) Blake. On August 10, 1981 he married Bonnie Wright in Bessmer, Michigan. She survives.
Chi attended Bemidji University pursuing a degree in social studies, graduating in 1956. After graduation he taught in Mazeppa, Minnesota for 6 years as a social studies teacher but enjoyed the honor of being a coach for all sporting events that the school had to offer. In 1964 Chi moved to Athens and started teaching social studies and physical education. There he was instrumental on starting the Athens High School Football Program and coaching it for over 26 years. Following retiring from coaching and teaching Chi enjoyed hosting at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in the Wisconsin Dells. Some of Chi's favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing, especially the trips up to Canada with his friends and family. Most of all he will be remembered for his need to read the USA Today and cheer on his favorite football team, the Minnesota Vikings.
Chi proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Wright) Blake, McAllen, Texas, his children, Bill (Lori) Blake, Athens, Tammy Blake, Stevens Point, Cyndi (Dennis) Agner, North Carolina, Michelle (Al) Natzke, Athens, Tim (Socorro) Blake, San Diego, Tony (Cheryl) Blake, Texas and Andy Blake, Wisconsin Dells, 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and three brothers, Bud (Norma) Blake, International Falls, Minnesota, Jim Blake, Montana and Jake Blake, Minnesota, along with other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides his parents, Chi was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Muenzhuber-Blake-Frey and one grandson, Jeremiah Blake.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 6, 2006 at Fellowship Bible Church, Marathon. The Rev. Tom Thorpe will officiate. Friends may call on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Chi's name for a future football scholarship at Athens High School.
