Clara A. Wirkus

Clara A. Wirkus 89, Edgar, died peacefully with her family at her side. She was enjoying a family vacation up north, when she passed away suddenly Monday morning, September 6, 2010. She was born March 15, 1921 in the town of Rietbrock, daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Socha) Mroczenski Clara served her country during World War II as a veteran of the WACS in the United States Army. Before joining the Army, Clara worked in Chicago and following her military service, she moved to the Wausau area. On June 5, 1948, she married Edward Wirkus at Holy Family Catholic Church, Poniatowski and they have resided in Edgar since that time. She will be remembered for her many talents including cooking, baking and was an exceptional seamstress until her eyesight deteriorated. Her family and friends will truly miss her kindness and giving spirit. Clara is survived by her loving husband, Edward and was much loved by her children, Dale (Marvita) Wirkus, Kodiak, Alaska., Jean Wirkus, Libertyville, Ill. and Lynn (Jerry) Strasser, Rib Mountain and grandmother to Ben and Sam Wirkus and Ryan and Jeffrey Strasser and sibling to Adeline Houf, Wausau, Theresa (Don) Torner, Cudahy and Edward Mroczenski, Athens. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Leona, Lucy and Mary Ann and her brothers, Dennis and Florian. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2010 at St. John Catholic Church, Edgar. Rev. Robert Streveler will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Sawyer-Drumm Post No. 393, Edgar.
