Charles F. Stieber, 86, Marathon, died Monday, January 5, 2015 under the care of Interim Hospice at Copperleaf Assisted Living, Marathon.
He was born September 14, 1928 in Marathon, son of the late Anton and Augusta (Blume) Stieber. On July 1, 1950 he married Rita Leitermann in Marathon. She survives.
Charles served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was part of the 100th Tank Battalion and was a member of the American Legion Alois Dreikosen Post No. 469, Marathon. Charles worked in quality control for the former American Can and James River Corporation and also farmed ginseng. For 30 years he was a volunteer at the St. Anthony Spirituality Center and he was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Holy Name Society as well as an usher and Eucharistic minister at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. Charles loved Christmas and his family has many fond memories of Christmas time and his special way of opening presents.
Survivors include his wife, Rita, Marathon; children, Catherine (David) Joswiak, Wausau, Francine (Ed) Flanders, Rothschild, Lynette (Fran) Heil, Wausau and Donald (Lynn) Stieber, Marathon; grandchildren, Nicole Joswiak, Stephannie (Nathan) Parris, Nathan (Catherine) Joswiak, Becky Flanders and Chad Flanders, Kelly (Jason) Schaeffer, Amy (Mike Fleischman) Peter, David (Telia) Peter, Joel (Laura) Stieber, Gregory (Katrina) Stieber, Dianne (Paul) Leffel and Myron (Rebecca) Stieber; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Henrietta Stieber and Charlotte Seubert; brother-in-law, Allan (Marcella) Leitermann, many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, James and Jerome Stieber, father and mother-in-law, Elmer and Eleanor Leitermann, sister-in-law, Mary Stieber and brother-in-law, Joseph Seubert.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services all at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Anthony Spirituality Center or St. Mary Catholic Church.
