Charles "Doug" Douglas Asmundsen, 79, of 1901 N. 3rd St., Wausau, died Monday, October 19, 2015.
Doug was born June 2, 1936 in Rhinelander, son of the late Roy and Goldie Asmundsen.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Darlene, a daughter, Cheryl, a son-in-law, Gordie, a brother, Roy and three sisters, Joyce, Arlene and Dorothy.
He is survived by six children: four sons, James Asmundsen, Richard (Gwen) Asmundsen both of Wausau, Michael (Cathy) Asmundsen and Kenneth (Linda) Asmundsen both of Merrill; two daughters, Catherine (Vern) Block of Ringle and Angela (Jeff) Asmundsen of Wausau; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces and many dear friends.
Fresh from high school graduation in 1954, Doug joined the United States Navy and served for four years. It was after this he met, fell in love with and married mom, Darlene Ann Nienow. Together they, somehow raised seven children.
Dad worked hard as a steeplejack for many years, owning and operating the Hi-Lo Service Company before selling and retiring.
He will always be remembered by his children and friends for his endless love and kind heart. We will all miss his witty ability to tell a joke, show us some amazing card tricks or share a story from the past, all of which were sure to bring laughter and smiles to all who were around him.
Dad enjoyed hunting with the boys and nephews, fishing, golfing, a good game of cards with family and friends and he will always be known as "one of the best" when it comes to shooting an awesome game of pool.
Though there were seven of us children we never went without. Mom and dad worked hard to give us all we ever needed and as we grew together we learned that money may make you wealthy but it's the love of family that makes you rich. God blessed us dearly, we were as rich as you could be.
Dad always told us, it doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing, you can always talk to God. Trust in him, believe in him and pray to him and he will take care of the rest.
May dad rest in peace now until we can all be together again.
