Catherine G. Scholl

February 5, 1919 — July 10, 2013

Catherine "Katie" Gladys Scholl, 94, formerly of Wausau, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Poplar Place Assisted Living Center, Rothschild. Catherine was born February 5, 1919 in the town of Wien, Marathon County, daughter of the late John and Magdalene (Uebelacker) Sonnentag. Later, the family moved to a farm on River Road, just north of Marathon, where Mom grew up. She attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School and graduated from Marathon High School in 1937. Mom's dream was to attend college to become an English teacher. But in 1937, the Great Depression still gripped the country, so she was unable to follow that dream. After her high school graduation, she moved to Wausau where she worked at the former Memorial Hospital, and during World War II, at Marathon Battery. In 1947, Mom was working at North Side Pharmacy on Sixth Street in Wausau, when a handsome young Navy veteran named Alfred Scholl came in. Mom enjoyed Al's sense of humor and they soon fell in love. Al and Katie were married on May 28, 1949 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marathon. Theirs was a love match that was a joy to see. Mom and Dad were wonderful dancers and enjoyed taking trips around the state. The time they spent with family was special to them; particularly attending their grandchildren's various activities. They had been married 47 years and 11 months when Dad died on April 23, 1996. Mom had two part-time jobs during her marriage that she enjoyed. In the mid-1960's, she was a cook at Newman High School, and later moved to St. Anne School to cook there, retiring at age 70. Mom loved the students and enjoyed bantering with them. She was a member of St. Anne Parish since the early 1950s and often helped out at the Lenten Fish Fries, the Polka Fest, and in various other ways. She was a longtime member of St. Anne's Fatima Council, the Sympathy Circle, The Catholic Daughters of the Americas (over 50 years), and the National Catholic Society of Foresters, serving as President for a number of years. Our beloved mother is survived by three daughters and six grandchildren. They are Mary Beth (Jim) Maas, Rothschild, and her two children, Corey Kunzer, Waterbury, CN, and Bethaney Kunzer, Madison, WI; Kathy Lynn (Jim) Giese and their son, Dan Giese, Wausau; Cindy (Gary) Wojciechowski and their children, Kim (Mark) Tomaszewski, Wausau; Jacob (Alissa) Wojciechowski, Oshkosh, and Eric Wojciechowski, Wausau. Mom is further survived by one great-grandson, Isaac Tomaszewski and two sisters-in-law, Loretta Scholl, Wausau, Elaine Sonnentag, Marathon, thirteen nieces and nephews (her sister's daughter, Janice Deininger was especially dear to her), and many loved and dearly appreciated friends. Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, her parents, John and Magdalene, her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn & Norbert Buchberger, her brother Merlin Sonnentag, and one nephew, James Sonnentag. Several dear friends also predeceased her, as did Mom's "naughty friend" Misty, her dog. Mom, thank you for everything. We could not have had a more wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. You were always, always thinking of us and even though you told us, "Please don't cry for me", we can't help but miss you. You and Dad were looking forward to meeting Jesus and Mary, His Blessed Mother, and now we know you're both in their care. Special thanks to Poplar Place Assisted Living and to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services for the loving care given to Mom, and to Mom's many dear friends who always remembered her and were so caring and loving. May God bless all of you. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday July 15, 2013 at The Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Rev. Thomas Zelinski will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Memorials may be directed to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services or St. Anne Parish. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, is in charge of arrangements.
