Catherine "Katie" Gassner
77, Wausau, died Weds. June 13, 2012 at her home.
She was born February 10, 1935, in Marathon, daughter of the late Jacob and Victoria (Kohlbeck) Altenhofen. On May 21, 1958, she married Lawrence Gassner in Marathon. He survives.
After high school, Katie worked as a secretary with the Marathon County Highway Department. For many years, she served as secretary with the Wausau Area Catholic Schools at St. Matthew School, retiring in 2010. In retirement, Katie enjoyed feeding her Jersey calves, watching her grandchildren show animals at the fair and spending time with her family. She was a longtime member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and was a member of the funeral choir.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Gassner, her children, Mark Gassner, Jerome Gassner and Theresa Stubbe, all of Wausau and Mary (Jeff) Hall, Edgar; five grandchildren, Marie and Emily Stubbe; Robert, Victoria and Adam Hall; siblings, Jacob (Marion) Altenhofen, Victoria (Kenneth) Petznick, all of Marathon and Carol (Ron) Boss, Eau Claire.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Roger, James and Charles Altenhofen and Dave Kohlbeck.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday June 18, 2012 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. Robert Thorn will preside. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Marathon. Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau and again on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish rosary at 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Stewart Avenue funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Matthew Catholic Church.
