Carroll Joseph Wirt

December 25, 1935 — April 4, 2014

Carroll Joseph Wirt died, April 4, 2014, peacefully in his sleep under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Service. He was born on Christmas Day, 1935, the youngest of ten children to William Montezuma Wirt and Rosa Ellen (Brown) Wirt, in Schofield. Carroll was a Wausau Senior High School Graduate, and served his country in the United States Army from June 26, 1958 until June 24, 1960. He then lived in Illinois where he was employed for many years at IT&T Bell & Gossett in Skokie. Carroll was an avid reader and loved to watch old movies on television. He did the Sunday crossword in pen, with rarely a mistake. With his knowledge from reading you could talk to him about anything and have a great conversation. Carroll was also a historian at heart and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of history with family and friends. Carroll was married to Audrey Briggs and later to Dorothy Ridges Keithley, both of whom preceded him in death. Survivors include sister-in-law: Phyllis Wirt and brothers-in-law Clifford Pittsley and Clarence "Midge" Lenzen; three step-grandchildren, Taylor Del Campo, Gabriella and Jordan Campo; one step great-grandson, Nathaniel Garcia; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Denzil (Patty), Wayne (Betty and Erma), Royal, Earl (Lena) and Valmon Wirt; sisters and brothers-in-law Sylvia (Vincent) Stachovak, Viola Pittsley, Adale (Arnold) Heidemann, and Azalia (Ray Rickman) Lenzen. Carroll's last few months were especially made comfortable by the companionship and loving care of his great-nephew, Dan Kuether. He also found pleasure from the company of Dee-Dee, a dog on loan from his great-great nephew, Ben Kuether. There will be no services as this is the request of Carroll. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.petersonkraemer.com
