Carey J. Schroeder, 80, Rothschild, died Friday, January 30, 2015 at St. Clare's Hospital, surrounded by loving family. He will be dearly missed.
He was born January 28, 1935, in Milwaukee, son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Slagowski) Schroeder. On September 3, 1960, he married Jean Bonkoski at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. The love of his life survives.
Carey served his country in the US Army. Prior to his retirement, Carey had been employed as a Carpenters Superintendent on various large scale construction projects. He was a 54 year member of the Carpenters Union Local 460.
Among his favorite pastimes were gardening, fishing, woodworking, camping, and hunting. After his retirement, Carey began making quilts which he donated to various hospitals, nursing homes, homeless shelters, charities, and anyone in need. Friendly and generous, he helped anyone he could; if you had a project, he'd help you finish it. If you were lucky enough to know Carey, you had a friend for life and a nickname, too. He and Jean wintered in Florida for twelve years. His family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, were his great joy.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Schroeder, Rothschild; three children, Randy (Denise) Schroeder, Mosinee, Rhonda Schroeder (Randy Weibel), Eden Prairie, Minn., Carrie Jean Schroeder (Julie Feia), Riverside, Calif.; four grandchildren, Tanya (Steve) Donat, Cassandra (Mike) Peterson, Michael Brueggeman, Stephanie (Erik) Anderson; two great grandchildren, Brooklyn Donat and Sydnee Jean Donat; siblings, Jeanette (Donald) Stubbe, Wausau, Bette Ann (Irving) Fletcher, Weston, Doris (George) Melder, Hubertus, Tom Schroeder (Jeanette Mitchell), Wausau, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Wendy Schroeder, a niece, Roxanne Fletcher, and a nephew, Ricky Fletcher.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday February 3, 2015 at St. Mark Catholic Church, Rothschild. The Rev. Allan L. Slowiak will preside. Private entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military honors will be conducted by members of American Legion, Montgomery Plant Post No. 10. Friends may call on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the food pantry, the Neighbors' Place, his favorite charity.
