Muriel "Bill" Mesenberg April 7, 1923 May 9, 2013 Muriel, or as he was more affectionately known, "Bill" Mesenberg, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2013 under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice at Mount View Care Center, Wausau. Bill was born April 7, 1923 in Edgar, Wisconsin. He was born to Soloma Mesenberg, and was raised by his grandparents on their family farm. He attended 8 years of grade school in Edgar and was proud to say he was the valedictorian of his class. He had to leave school then to help work on the farm. When he was 18 Bill moved to Wausau and worked for the railroad until he enlisted in the service. Bill served his country in the US NAVY from 1943 to 1945 during WWII. He fought many battles in Europe and Africa, but he was most proud of his participation in the Battle of Normandy. During his tour on the ship Bill had the opportunity to become the ship's barber. He became quite skilled with the scissors and clippers, and carried that on into his private life cutting many of his families and friends hair. While at home on a two week leave in June of 1945, Bill had the fortune of meeting the woman who became the love of life, Theresa Engman. They had a whirlwind romance and were joined in marriage two weeks later on June 16, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau and have celebrated almost 68 years together. Bill and Theresa raised 9 children over those years. Bill was a hard worker and worked various jobs, sometimes 2 and 3 at a time to help raise the family. Later he became employed at Marmet Corporation as a machinist and retired from there after 25 years. Bill especially enjoyed planting and tending his annual garden which he produced a bounty of crops he was more than happy to share with family and friends. He also enjoyed his flower gardens, and spent many hours watering and weeding his petunias. But he was more than happy to drop the hose and hoe and pick up a cane pole to take his grandkids fishing when the time came. He also never refused the challenge of a game of horseshoes or a rousing game of family kickball in the backyard on a Sunday after making his famous grilled chicken. No one made chicken on the grill like Bill! Bill truly loved spending time with his family and was always looking to crack a joke with his quirky sense of humor to get everyone laughing. Survivors include his loving wife, Theresa Mesenberg, Wausau, 9 children, Gary (Linda) Mesenberg, Tomahawk, Kenneth (Linda) Mesenberg, Mosinee, Dan Mesenberg, Arizona, Suzette (Gary) Meyer, Wausau, Allan Mesenberg, Wisconsin Rapids, Rhonda Mesenberg, Wausau, Diane (Tom) Krivoshein, Kronenwetter, Brian (fiancAC. Jennifer) Mesenberg, Arizona and Lisa (Todd) Domke, Hancock, 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Bill was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kristie Meyer. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau. The Rev. Joy Nelson Jeffers will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau where full military honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post #388, Wausau. Friends may call on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services all at the Sixth Street funeral home.
