Bernard J. Toner, 66, Wausau, died peacefully Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, with his family by his side under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Hospice House, Wausau.
Bernie was born March 31, 1943 in Hettinger, North Dakota to William and Kathryn Toner. The Toners moved to St. Paul, Minnesota when Bernie was at a young age. Bernie was a graduate of Cretin High School (1961), University of Minnesota (B.A. Economics, 1965), and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (M.B.A. 1974). Bernie served in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict from 1966-68, and was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. Bernie moved to Wausau in 1968, and married Linda Manfred on August 19, 1972. Professionally, Bernie worked his entire 37 year career at Wausau Insurance Companies, and ultimately was a Systems Manager in the IT department.
Bernie was a supportive and loving father, and spent many hours watching his children play ice hockey. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed reading, listening to NPR and classical music, and going to the family cabin in Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin. After his retirement from Wausau Insurance in 2000, he and Linda spent winters at their condominium in Naples, Florida.
Bernie is survived by wife, Linda, son Christopher, daughter Leslie (Matthew) Anklam, grandson Conner Anklam, brother James (Susan) Toner, sister Sheila (Don) Exner, sister Kathy (Ron) McBroom, sister Maureen (Timothy) Singleton, brother Patrick (Susan) Toner, sister Peggy (Harold) Riehm, and sister Julie Toner, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
The Funeral Mass will be 12:00 noon, Friday November 13, 2009 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. Robert Thorn will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park cemetery, Wausau with military honors conducted by the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post #10. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Thursday November 12, 2009 at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau and again from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 428, Wausau, Wisconsin 54402-0428.
