Bernard C. Barkow

Bernard C. Barkow 102, Athens died Tuesday, April 12, 2011 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Marywood Convalescent Center, Wausau. He was born January 5, 1909 in Colby, son of the late Albert and Augusta (Youch) Barkow. On November 1, 1930 he married Erna Waldow in Hamburg. She preceded him in death on January 27, 2006. Bernard drove gas truck for Dixie Oil Company, Athens and then later retired from Soo Line Railroad as a foreman. Some of his favorite pastimes included playing cards, fishing, gardening and listening to polka music. Survivors include his daughter, Bernette (Alvin) Steffenhagen, Merrill, one son, Dale (Rosalie) Barkow, Athens, one daughter-in-law, Evelyn Barkow, Medford, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one son, Marvin Barkow, one brother and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens. The Rev. Andrew Alberts will officiate. Burial will be in Athens Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services all at the church. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Athens is in charge of arrangements.
