Arlene Matis, 89, Wausau, was taken by angels on August 26, 2012 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Wausau Manor.
She was born September 26, 1922 in Milan, daughter of the late Joe and Adela (Gribowski) Heindl. On November 15, 1941 she married Frank Matis who preceded her in death on January 10, 1987.
Arlene always loved having children around, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved flowers, gardening, playing guitar, singing and yodeling. She enjoyed bird watching, especially hummingbirds and they were at her window up until the end of her life on earth. Arlene loved her family unconditionally.
Survivors include her two daughters, Jeanne (Bill) Morrison, Iron Mountain, Michigan, and Carolyn (Gary Gruna) Layman, Wausau; three special granddaughters, Kim (Tim) Rowell, Kingsford, Michigan, Shelley Carroll, Iron Mountain, Michigan, and Nicki (Don Mertes) LaPorte, Wausau; ten great-grandchildren, Amber, Jordan, Gabe, Cassie, Caleb, Christian, Ella, Vanessa, Maddie, and Jessica; five great great-grandchildren, Lilly, Max, Tyler, Mkynna and Jonathon; sister, Mercedes (Clarence) Szuminski, Wausau;sister-in-law, Mary (Charlie) Stepan, Mosinee; special family member, Cathy (Mike) Bangert, Athens and many nieces and nephews that were very dear to her.
A celebration of Arlene's life will be held at a later date.
A very special thank you to the incredible staff at Wausau Manor for giving so much of yourselves to provide the care, love and attention our mother needed. We sincerely appreciate your dedication and compassion given not only to our mother, but ourselves as well. You are all angels and will always have a special place in our hearts.
