Anna T. Merkes of Edgar died Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Aspirus Hospice House in Wausau.
She was born May 3, 1919 in Wood County, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Dieringer) Stini. On May 3, 1948 she married Norbert Merkes at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Bakerville. He preceded her in death on December 29, 2012.
Anna was a homemaker whose children will always remember the large garden she planted and the many hours spent canning vegetables for her family. For many years she was a part of the custodial staff at Edgar Public Schools. She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Anna and Norbert did a bit of traveling, enjoyed playing cards with their "Card Club" and always fit in an afternoon game of dice.
Survivors include her children, Diana (Michael) Stritzel, Oshkosh, Dexter (Cressie) Merkes, Kansas City, Missouri, Doris (Michael) Breidel, LaCrosse, Duwayne (Kris) Merkes and Donna (Joe) Grenwalt, both of Edgar; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Thomson, Travis (Wendy) Stritzel, Tricia Breidel, Heather (Josh) Goetsch, Lindsey (Glenn) Knoeck, Shannon Merkes and Megan (Bobby) Revello; eight great-grandchildren, Trenton, Cecilia, Spencer, Makenna, Ella, Jordan, Emily and Addison; three sisters, Loretta Laumer, Lucinda Kopp and Helen (Oliver) Schueller; one brother, Clarence (Agnes) Stini; sister-in-law, Caroline Stini; brothers-in-law, Hubert (Rosemary) Merkes and Alvin (Bea) Merkes.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son, Daniel. Also, brothers, Norbert, Gilbert, Anton, Joseph and infant Michael Stini and sisters, Margaret Donnerbauer, Mildred Mannigel, Florence Werner, Marcella Bargender and Mary Reel.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2016 at St. John Catholic Church, Edgar. The Rev. Thomas Huff will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Edgar and again on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a 7:30 p.m. prayer service Sunday at the Edgar funeral home.
Anna's family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the entire staff and all the volunteers at Aspirus Hospice House. The wonderful care and compassion she received her final months will never be forgotten.
