Althea M. Hughes
94, Wausau, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Ministry Saint Clare's Hospital, Weston.
She was born December 17, 1917 in Wausau, daughter of the late Carl and Augusta (MacCormick) Carlson. On October 25, 1944, she married Miles T. Hughes at St. James Catholic Church, Wausau. He preceded her in death on January 9, 1996.
Althea was a founding member of The Church of St. Anne and was involved in many church activities. She also spent many hours volunteering at Marywood Center, the former St. Mary's Hospital and Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Among her favorite pastimes, she enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, crafts, word search puzzles, traveling and especially dinners at Ron's with Genevieve and Helen. Most of all, she loved being a grandma and spending time with children.
Survivors include, six children, Ronald (Pat Tyberg) Hughes, Schofield, Eileen Hughes, Madison, Mary (Michael) Hoppe, Newark, Del., Maureen Hughes, Manitowoc, Jean (Ray Foster) Hughes, Minnetonka, Minn. and Barbara Hughes, Marshfield; one daughter-in-law, Karen Hughes, Brookfield; nine grandchildren, Erin (Myron Hooks) Hughes, Michael (Amy) Hughes, Kevin Hughes, Tim Hughes, Charles (Ari Eisenberg) Hughes, Bridget Hoppe, Ben Hoppe, Emily Foster and Rebecca Foster; eight great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Genevieve Plant, Helen Goetsch and Dorothy Hughes; as well as many cherished friends.
Besides her parents and husband, Miles, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Hughes; and one daughter-in-law, LeeAnn Hughes.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2012 at The Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Rev. Alan Burkhardt will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.
Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established to benefit a charity that serves young children.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Ministry Saint Clare's Hospital for all the care and compassion shown to Althea and our family. Also, a special thank you to Bonnie Kaczmarek for all her dedication and warmth.
