Albin Edwin Hornung, age 89, former Marathon resident, passed away on August 4, 2013 at Cedar Ridge Elder Services in Schofield.
He was born December 4, 1923, in the town of Marathon to the late Peter and Mary (Murr) Hornung. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Knoeck on October 21, 1950. She survives.
Albin farmed in the town of Marathon, and later on raised ginseng on the original homestead settled in the 1850's by his great grandfather. Prior to farming, he went to Marathon County Normal School and worked as a teacher for a short time. Albin was an avid reader with a love for history. He enjoyed playing cards, and loved working his land both in Marathon and the town of Mosinee. After a devastating tornado in 1977, Albin began work at the Milco Division of Wausau Metals Corporation. His greatest joy was his children and time spent with his grandchildren. He will always be remembered as a hard working and fun loving father who valued education, his faith, and above all, his family. He was a life-long member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon.
Survivors besides his wife, Mary Ann, include three daughters; Verna (Richard) Toftum of Amherst, Marjorie (Dr. Ron) Charipar of Ladysmith, and Irene Haas of Colby; one son, James (Linda) Hornung of Marathon; twelve grandchildren; Sarah (Aaron) Kramer of Prairie du Chien, Michael Toftum of Stevens Point, Dr. Elizabeth (Dr. Allen) Lee of Burlington, Vermont, Matthew Charipar (fiancAC.e Kate) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kristin Charipar of Boulder, Colorado, Ryan (Heidi) Haas of Chicago, Illinois, Katie (Mark) Clark of Phoenix, Arizona, Renee Haas of Baltimore, Maryland, Erin Haas (fiancAC. Chris) of Providence, Rhode Island, and Sasha Hornung, Hannah Hornung, and Alex Hornung of Marathon; four great-grandchildren; Kylie, Emily and Carson Kramer, and Finley Haas. He is further survived by a sister, Joan Boehm of Wausau, brothers-in-law, Rudy Lang, Marvin Knoeck, Gordon (Ann) Knoeck, and many nieces and nephews.
Albin was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, George (Katherine), John (Verlie), and Peter Hornung, and ten sisters, Mary (Anton) Knauf, Rose (Ludwig) Martin, Hilda (Bill) Printz, Adeline (John) Michaud, Helen (Leonard) Kummerow, Gertrude (Rudy) Lang, Florence (Ray) Kage, Viola (Charles) Lambert, Lorraine (Arnold) Krautkramer, and Irene (Florian) Sekorski.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Marathon. Friends may call Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services all at the church.
