Vilas J. Platta

Vilas J. Platta, 81, Wausau, died Friday November 9, 2012, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born August 11, 1931, in Hatley, son of the late Ernest and Regina (King) Platta. On June 13, 1953, he married Patricia Suske at St. Therese Catholic Church, Rothschild. She survives. From 1952 until 1977 Vilas was Vice President at Citizens State Bank, Wausau and from 1978 until his retirement served as Senior Vice President at Peoples State Bank, Wausau. Through the years, he was active in many local civic and fraternal organizations. Among them, the Wausau Jaycees, where he served as treasurer and Chairman of the Fourth of July Celebration; the Wausau Area Retail Council, where he served as President; the Wausau Noon Optimists, where he served as Director; the United Way; the Wausau Elks Lodge No. 248; and the Knights of Columbus, George Schreier Council No. 1069, Wausau. Vilas was an active member of the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, where he served as an usher, lector, Parish Council member, was chairman of the Finance Committee and was treasurer of the Holy Name Society. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports and polka dancing. Vilas and Pat enjoyed traveling with Polka Productions and had the opportunity to dance all over the world with the Jerry Goetsch Orchestra. Vilas also enjoyed watching his grandsons play in many area sporting events. Survivors include his wife, Patricia "Pat" Platta, Wausau, two sons, Scott (Jeanne) Platta, Wausau; Brian Platta, Orlando, Fla., two grandchildren, Dr. Christopher (Nancy) Platta and Daniel Platta, one great grandson, Mason Platta; one sister, Sally Borski, Rothschild, three brothers, Richard (Rosie) Platta, Wausau, Arnold (Arlette) Platta, Rhinelander and Arthur (Nancy) Platta, Rhinelander, many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Jim Borski. Private family services will be held. Rev. David Rybicki will officiate and inurnment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Rezazadeh, his support staff of doctors, nurses and everyone at the Cancer Center, Aspirus Wausau Hospital and Marywood Convalescent Center for their compassionate care and concern for Vilas and the entire family.
