Roger Altenhofen, 79, of Marathon died Friday, March 16, 2012 at his home. Roger was born August 16, 1932 in Wausau to Jacob and Victoria (Kohlbeck) Altenhofen. He married Joan Pernsteiner on September 5, 1960 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford. He attended Marathon Schools and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marathon.
Roger, along with Joan, was a dairy and ginseng farmer in the town of Marathon. He also enjoyed working in the woods for many years making maple syrup, logging, cutting firewood, and hunting. He was the treasurer for Cassel Gardens Farmers Cheese Co-op for over 35 years. He served as the assessor and town clerk for the Town of Marathon and served on the Wisconsin Ginseng Board.
Roger was an avid reader and enjoyed hunting with friends and family. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially when his grandchildren were participating.
Survivors include his wife Joan and their 5 children: Lucy (Russell) Altenhofen-Butek, Bloomington, MN, Thomas Altenhofen, Andrew (Sharon) Altenhofen, Charles (Bethany) Altenhofen, Marathon, and Rita (Michael) Troseth, Rosemount, MN. Additionally, he is survived by 6 grandchildren: Christopher, Kimberly (Paul), David, Sara, Julia, and Samuel. Surviving siblings are Catherine (Lawrence) Gassner, Wausau, Jacob (Marion) Altenhofen, Victoria (Kenneth) Petznick, Marathon, and Carol (Ron) Boss, Eau Claire. He is further survived by an aunt, Mary Draxler, Marshfield and other relatives.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, James Altenhofen, Charles Altenhofen, and David Kohlbeck.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marathon. The Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in the parish Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon, is in charge of arrangements.
Roger's family would like to thank to Father Joseph Diermeier for his support and the medical staff of Ministry Health Care and Marshfield Clinic for the excellent care provided to Roger during his illness. The family would also like to thank the first responders and the Rib Mountain Fire Department EMTs for their assistance.
In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in Roger's honor.
