Robert E. Tierney, 87, Wausau, died Friday December 21, 2012 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
He was born April 25, 1925 in Chippewa Falls, son of the late Edward J. and Dorothy (Running-Brehaut) Tierney. On April 3, 1948 he married Betty Gruling at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. She survives.
Robert worked in maintenance for the United States Postal Service and was co-owner of the former Norberg Supply Company in Wausau. The family also owned and operated Tierney's Rib Mountain Restaurant for several years.
He served his country in the United States Marine Corp. as a Corporal during World War II and had the distinct honor of having received two Purple Hearts for valor. He was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus, George Schreier Council No. 1069, Wausau and was also a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Pere Rene Menard General Assembly, Wausau.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, Wausau; children, James (Vicki) Tierney, Wausau, Gale Tierney, Wausau, Gary (Janet) Tierney, Roseville, Minnesota, Debra (Mike) Diewald, Madison, Michael (Susan) Tierney, Madison, Thomas (Kristine) Tierney, Wausau and Tamara (Knox) Johnson, Kaukauna; 38 grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Jerry (Jeannie) Tierney, Calif., three sisters, Pat (Al) Kotke, Las Vegas, Judy Tierney, Maine, Joan (Pat) Duffy, Virginia, two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Tierney, Madison and Jean Tierney, Appleton, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Thursday December 27, 2012 at the Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Rev. Alan T. Burkhardt will preside. Entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the American Legion, Montgomery Plant Post, No. 10, Wausau Friends may call on Weds. from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau and again on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish vigl service at 7:30 p.m. Weds. evening at the Stewart Avenue funeral home.In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
