Harold J. Schumacher

Harold J. Schumacher 74, Marathon, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at his home, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services surrounded by his loving wife, children, grandchildren and sister. He was born November 4, 1932, in Marathon, son of the late John and Marie (Ruplinger) Schumacher. On June 24, 1961, he married Mary Ellen Knauf at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marathon. She survives. Harold was a veteran of the US Army. After receiving his Master's Degree from the UW Superior, Harold taught high school in Iola-Scandinavia and Colby. For 15 years he taught at North Central Technical Institute, Wausau, retiring as Head of the Math Department. He also raised ginseng for 40 years in the Marathon area. Among his favorite pastimes were bowling, traveling, carpentry and he especially enjoyed designing and building houses. Special to Harold was spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping with his children and grandchildren. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marathon, a 50 year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, a member of the Rib Riders Snowmobile Club and a past member of the Marathon School Board. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen, five children, Lori (David) Jore, Appleton; Daniel (Debra) Schumacher, Marathon; Donna (Dan) Leydet, Marathon; James Schumacher, Marathon and David Schumacher, Marathon. Grandchildren, Nate, Eric & Andrea Jore; Heather, Matthew, Kristen & Aaron Schumacher; Thomas & Andrew Leydet; one brother, Merlin (Gen) Schumacher, Marathon and one sister, Dorothy Schumacher, Marathon. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil Schumacher. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday December 30, 2006 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marathon. Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marathon. Visitation will continue Saturday from 9 - 11 a.m. at the church. The family would like to thank Dr. Rezazadeh, the nurses and staff that helped to care for Harold.
