Janice “Jan” Peterson, 85, New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Wausau, died Saturday July 21, 2018, at Gulfside Hospice, New Port Richey. She was born January 6, 1933, in Wausau, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Casimir and Antoniette (Cherek) Shebelski. On September 1, 1956, she married Donald E. Peterson at St. Paul Catholic Church, Mosinee. He preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 2015.
Jan was a class of 1950 graduate of Mosinee High School, and a 1953 graduate of St. Mary Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as Surgical Registered Nurse at St. Mary Hospital. She also worked for the late William Norton, M.D., in surgery and in the office. She also served as the secretary/treasurer of Peterson Funeral Home, Wausau.
Jan was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club and of the Rosary Confraternity at St. Michael Parish, Wausau. She was a volunteer in the Emergency Room of Wausau Hospital for many years. She also helped out in the lunch room of Newman High School, Wausau and in the garden at St. Anthony Retreat Center, Marathon. Jan loved reading and working any type of jigsaw or crossword puzzle. She also enjoyed spending time on knitting, needlepoint and cross stitch crafts.
Survivors include four children, Mark (Lisa) Peterson, New Port Richey, Fla., Mary Peterson, Rochester, Minn., Mike Peterson, Galveston Island, Tex., and Paul (Barbara) Peterson, Rockford, Ill.; grandchildren, Lisa, John, Christina, Ryan, Alex, Kailee, Megan, Bailey, Bridget, Maximilian, and five great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; sisters, Mathilda Marko, Dorothy Shelbelski and Theresa Weisbrod; brothers, James Shebelski and Edwin Shebelski.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Wednesday August 22, 2018, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. Msgr. Mark Pierce will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
