Donald Sandberg Obituary

Donald “Sandy”, because of his sandy-brown hair, A. Sandberg, 88, Rib Mountain, was taken from his family, Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Ascension Saint Clare’s Hospital, Weston.

He was born January 10, 1930 in Oshkosh, son of the late George and Frieda (Ehlert) Sandberg.  On September 3, 1960, he married Jane M. Holloman-Shampine in Pine City, MN.  She survives.

Don joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17 and served on the USS Boxer during the end of WWII and the beginning Korean War. He was assigned to the Task Force 77 in overtaking of Inchon Bay. 

Don worked as Executive Vice-President at Anson Gilkey in Merrill for 21 years.  He also worked for Modu-Line Windows, Inc. in Wausau until his retirement at age 79.  Following his retirement, he enjoyed working as an accountant for his daughter and son-in-law’s business, Gagliano Eastgate Inn in Watertown.  He was a member of the Masons (32nd Degree), the Shriners and the Knights Templar. 

Don loved to travel around the world with his wife, Jane. He and Jane especially enjoyed their vacations to Hawaii.

He was a loving and caring, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Jane Sandberg, Rib Mountain, three children, Elizabeth (Joseph) Gagliano, Greenfield, Kathleen (Bryant) Calmes, Wausau and Brody Sandberg, Rib Mountain; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Jason Sandberg and Pamela Gomez; one step-daughter, Suzanne Holliday; and one sister, Sharon Stepen.

A time of remembrance will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday October 23, 2018 at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.at the funeral home. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Park at a later date.
